A Culturally Responsive project-based learning intervention in secondary science in Alabama and North Carolina

Dr(s). Clausell Mathis., Barbara Schneider, Joe Krajick, and Sheneka Williams (all professors at MSU) have been awarded a grant from the US Department of Education Education and Innovation for Research for roughly 7.7 million dollars to develop culturally responsive approaches to project-based learning for physics and chemistry in Alabama and North Carolina.

This project will develop and implement a project-based physics and chemistry curriculum, which includes curriculum materials, formative assessments, and professional development for teacher implementation. The project aims to enhance cultural responsiveness and assess its effectiveness in rural areas of the South. It will evaluate the performance of students who received the intervention through standardized assessments and their levels of engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Collaborative efforts will be made with faculty at two Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Alabama A&M and Winston-Salem State University.
